Tonight in London, J.M.W. Turner’s great masterpiece „Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino“ took centre stage when it sold to Hazlett, Gooden & Fox on behalf of The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California for £29,721,250 / $44,935,558 / €35,727,792 – setting an auction record for the British Master.
The painting, offered for sale this evening by a descendant of the 5th Earl of Rosebery, was the top-selling lot in the summer Evening Sale of Old Master & British Paintings, which realised the above-estimate total of £53,484,350 / $80,862,989 / €64,293,316 (pre-sale expectations were £33.8-49.6 million). The auction achieved sell-through rates of 68.4% by lot and 90.2% by value and established nine new artist records – for J.M.W. Turner, Jan Lievens, Bernard van Orley, Barnaba da Modena, Ludwig Schongauer, Paul Bril, James Ward, Francesco di Simone da Santa Croce and Ottavio Vannini. Buyers in tonight’s sale came from 15 different countries.
Further top-selling works tonight included: Jan Lievens’ study of the head and shoulders of an old bearded man wearing a cap, from circa 1629, which brought £2,505,250; three rare works by members of the great Brueghel dynasty which brought a combined total of £5,723,750; and a beautifully preserved panel depicting the Virgin and Child by Bernard van Orley, which sold for £993,250. |
